Oh dear Alistair, I promise I'm going to blog about this. It fits in an recurring idea I have for a couple of years now.

When you say: "What about reputation insurance, for example?" I think you went to subtle because, if reputation stops being an externality (i.e.: it becomes monetizable) the system will first of anything, try to put taxes on it. I know it sounds strange but is true that it's a ramification of the idea.

Let's for a moment say that a better system includes reputation in the economy. Then we should say that today we have an oversimplified system. In this oversimplified system, the reputation damage is what our current judicial system understands as moral claims or moral damage.

The judicial system is the first in trying to put a price to everything because justice is understood as compensation and our society is unfortunately very money driven.

In any case, treating reputation as a kind of capital is an attitude that I endorse.

Actually, it's kind of unfortunate. I've long assumed that there is no such thing as "family-only" sharing on the web simply because (1) It's a PITA to keep track of the relationships, (2) I might be able to navigate those settings, but the rest of my family can't. The republish factor is significant.

The result? I assume everything is on the record, forever archived in cache.google.com amongst others. For professionals in an industry, that means you're "on the job" even when you share birthday party pics for family to see over the weekend.

A wonderful reminder, too, of why it's so difficult to separate "personal" and "business" across Web 2.0.

And let's not forget that information isn't the only thing that's potentially propagated via this level of interconnectedness: <a href="http://devcentral.f5.com/weblogs/macvittie/archive/2009/04/13/the-web-2.0-botnet-twisting-twitter-and-automated-collaboration.aspx" rel="nofollow">"The Web 2.0 Botnet: Twisting Twitter and Automated Collaboration"</a> I am waiting. It hasn't happened yet but it will and when it does...look out. If miscreants can leverage the power of our connectedness, we could be in serious trouble.

So how are Rogers currently handing roaming users from outside the country?

I had a HTC phone I bought in Amsterdam airport, full list price, it was unlocked. I've used it for a couple of years with a pre-pay UK SIM card from the Three.co.uk network, works great for data and voice. My normal contract is with US AT&T but that was SIM only.

When ever I was in Toronto I was sure I was using Rogers with my HTC Touch Pro phone and my AT&T Data contract. The more I hear about the draconian Rogers network, the less I think the US Cell companies suck, but they really do, so that makes Rogers much worse.

I would say

1) Get involved with Montreal Tech Watch (http://montrealtechwatch.com/) - who hold regular startup networking events

2) Follow some montreal tech folks on twitter (that's how I heard about it). Feel free to look at my Twitter followed list for some ideas (I am @alexbfree) or just search on Montreal or MTL

Hope this helps
